History

Europeans have been settling in Brooklyn for almost 350 years. Breuckelen, a small Dutch settlement on the East River shore of Long Island, grew into a sizable city in the 19th century and was merged with New York City (then limited to Manhattan and the Bronx), the remaining rural areas of Kings County, and the largely rural areas of Queens and Staten Island in 1898 to form the modern City of New York.

Why do they call it Brooklyn?

Brooklyn’s roots can be traced back to the seventeenth century, when it was formed as a Dutch settlement. Who thought the Dutch were the ones who gave rise to that well-known accent? What’s the deal with Brooklyn? The Dutch gave the town its name after the nearby city of Breukelen.
