The New York Public Library

Background History:

Since 1876, the NYPL has provided free books, information, ideas, and education to New Yorkers. NYPL, founded in 1895, has 92 locations throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, including the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Together with its circulating branches, including the all-new SNFL, the Library offers an unparalleled wealth of information and opportunities.

Serving 16 million patrons a year and millions more online, the Library houses more than 56 million items, from books, e-books, and DVDs to famous research collections. NYPL’s historical collections include a draft of the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson, one of the few surviving copies of the Gutenberg Bible, and original works, manuscripts, letters, and more by William Shakespeare, Virginia Woolf, James Baldwin, Charles Dickens, Maya Angelou, John Coltrane, Augustus Savage, and more.
