History

Gothamist LLC is the operator of eight city-centric websites that focus on news, events, food, culture, and other forms of local coverage. In some cases, Gothamist LLC is also the franchisor of these websites. Jake Dobkin and Jen Chung were the ones that initiated the business in 2003. The company was purchased by Joe Ricketts, the current owner of DNAinfo, in March of 2017, and in November of that same year, the websites were temporarily taken offline because of a unionization vote taken by the journalism staff. It was announced in February 2018 that Gothamist, LAist, and DCist had been acquired by WNYC, KPCC, and WAMU, respectively. Chance the Rapper, who was born and raised in Chicago, made the purchase of Chicagoist in July of 2018.
