Huntington is one of the ten towns that make up Suffolk County in the state of New York. It was established in 1653 and can be found on the north coast of Long Island in the northwest corner of Suffolk County. Long Island Sound can be found to its north, and Nassau County can be found adjacent to its west. The greater New York metropolitan region includes Huntington as a municipality. The population of the municipality was counted at 204,127 during the census taken in the year 2020.
Huntington is the only municipality in the United States to prohibit self-service gas stations at the township level. It is also one of the few places in the United States where full-service gas stations are required and self-service stations are not permitted. The only other places in the country with laws that are comparable to Huntington’s are the entire state of New Jersey and the western-Mid Valley portion of Oregon.

History
Richard Holbrook, Robert Williams, and Daniel Whitehead of Oyster Bay bought land from the Matinecock clan in 1653. This parcel, known as the “First Purchase,” was bounded by Cold Spring Harbor on the west, Northport Harbor on the east, Old Country Road to the south, and Long Island Sound to the north. The three men gave the land to the existing settlers instantly. Huntington expanded to include all of the present-day Towns of Huntington and Babylon from that early settlement. Babylon was created in 1872 from the southern half of the town.
It is not known where the name originated; however, historians have come to the conclusion that it was called after the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell, who served as Lord Protector of England during the time that the town was founded. It wasn’t long after that first settlement that Huntington expanded to encompass all of the territory that would later become the towns of Huntington and Babylon as we know them today. In 1872, the municipality of Babylon was established as a result of the official separation of the southern portion of the metropolis.
In 1660, the town of Huntington held a vote and decided to join the Connecticut colony rather than continue to fall under the jurisdiction of New Amsterdam. This decision was made due to the fact that the majority of the town’s inhabitants were English settlers, which was not the case for the rest of the New Amsterdam colony. When the British took control of New Amsterdam in 1664 and renamed it New York, Huntington was not officially reinstated under the jurisdiction of New York until after this change.
