The city of Albany operates as the state capitol of New York. History
Algonquian-speaking Mahican called the Hudson River area Pempotowwuthut-Muhhcanneuw. Dutch fur traders built Fort Nassau in 1614 and Fort Orange in 1624. In 1664, the English managed to conquer the Dutch settlements and changed its name the city Albany after the Duke of Albany, James II. England chartered the city in 1686. New York’s capital since 1797. Albany is one of the oldest surviving British thirteen colonies and the lengthiest city in the US.
